Quebec public health authorities say swine flu will be a bigger threat this fall than conventional influenza.

Because of that, the Director of Public Health Protection is recommending people be given the vaccine for swine flu first, and only get the traditional flu shot at the end of the year.

"Our seasonal flu is most of the time after Christmas, where it happens, so we can still vaccinate for the pandemic H1N1 before Christmas and then in January do a catchup program if necessary for the seasonal flu," said Dr. Horacio Arruda.

Meanwhile, the head of the provincial vaccination committee says people vaccinated against seasonal flu last year appear to be more susceptible to swine flu, although he cautions that the research is very preliminary.
