Pierre Falardeau, one of Quebec's most eminent filmmakers, has died of cancer in Montreal. He was 62.

Falardeau died late Friday and leaves behind his common-law partner Manon Leriche and three children.

The director will be remembered in the province as much for his politics as his films.

Falardeau was a outspoken sovereigntist whose films dealt with issues of Quebec nationalism.

He also created the popular comedic character Elvis Gratton, a crude federalist whose life goal was to win fame as an Elvis impersonator.
