A statue of French President Charles de Gaulle was unveiled in front of the St. Jean Baptiste Society on Sherbrooke St. West Saturday.

De Gaulle made headlines in Montreal 40 years ago when he made the famous statement the balcony of city hall: "Vive le Quebec libre"

De Gaulle's statement was considered a serious breach of diplomatic protocol, producing tensions between Canada and France, while it also inflamed the Quebec sovereigntist movement.
