One lane of a major downtown thoroughfare will be closed for at least the next week for emergency repairs.

A sewer collapsed Friday afternoon on the southbound side of University street between Rene Levesque and St. Antoine.

The area is not flooded, but water could undercut the road and make it unsafe for traffic.

The sewer that failed is so old it's made of brick, and measures about 1 metre x 1 metre.

The remaining three lanes of southbound traffic will remain open, and northbound traffic will be unaffected.
