A 23-year-old cyclist died Tuesday morning in downtown Montreal after being hit and dragged by a car.

The driver hit the cyclist at 1:50 a.m. on Sherbrooke between University and Aylmer, but only came to a stop blocks away, at Durocher.

The cyclist was rushed to hospital, where he died of his injuries.

According to Montreal police officer Anie Lemieux, the 32-year-old driver was treated for shock, but not arrested.

"He was met with by our investigators from the collision squad, and he will be met with again in the next few days," said Lemieux.

Collision experts shut down Sherbrooke street to traffic for several hours, re-opening the street after 5 a.m.
