Models, hockey stars, and media celebrities walked down the catwalk in Old Montreal Tuesday night for the opening of the 17th edition of Fashion Week.

For the next three days local and international designers are showing off their work at Bonsecours Market.

Former Montreal Canadien turned Ottawa Senator Alex Kovalev was among those strutting down the runway, along with his wife, to model fashion for Envers.

"The idea is to show people what we're trying to achieve, what we're trying to do and at the same time have fun like we always do," said Kovalev.

CTV's own Debra Arbec and Mose Persico were promoting local designers from Helmer and Le Chateau by wearing their fashions.

Homegrown fashion is big business.

Montreal's fashion industry does more than $1 billion in business every year, and this year the provincial government is investing over a million dollars to help Harricana and Rudsak.

Harricana bills itself as an eco-luxury brand that recycles old fur and wedding dresses. 74% of its business is outside Quebec

Meanwhile Rudsak designer Evik Asattorian, who is focussing on leather accessories, is grateful for the support.

"I think they took both our companies as an example, being founded here and encouraging our industry and growing with the industry," said Asatoorian.
