After years on the brink, horse racing appears have reached the end of the line in Quebec.

Attractions Hippiques, which runs the province's four racetracks, will cease operations after declaring bankruptcy.

The agency has been trying to restructure its operations for more than a year.

The provincial government had pumped millions of dollars into the industry over the years but now it says it will no longer support the industry.

That means Montreal's Blue Bonnets racetrack, along with tracks in Quebec City, Trois Rivieres and Aylmer in the Gatineau are likely closed for good.

Attractions Hippiques said in a statement Wednesday that it can no longer function because the government has stopped refunding taxes on track betting.

After filing for bankruptcy protection, Attractions Hippiques will sell off its assets under a court-appointed trustee to pay creditors.

It may also sue the government for obstructing the relocation of the Montreal racetrack.
