Quebec could be cracking down further on drinking and driving.

The province says it's is studying the possibility of reducing the legal blood alcohol limit in Quebec.

The Charest government would maintain the current legal blood-alcohol limit of 0.08 for criminal cases.

But anyone at a lower limit of 0.05 would face sanctions such as fines and license suspensions. A government spokesman tells CTV News a report into the drunk-driving rules could be completed by next month.

MADD welcomes idea

The group Mothers Against Drunk Driving told CTV's Paul Karwatsky that they're in favour of the proposal. They point out that two out of every ten drunk-driving deaths are caused by people with a blood alcohol level between 0.05 and 0.08 - just at or below the legal threshold.

"Right now, at a roadblock, a police officer wouldn't be able to stop a driver who was at 0.06," said Therese-Anne Kramer.

"That person may crash two blocks down, and that was a perfectly preventable crash."

MADD would eventually like Quebec to criminalize driving with a blood-alcohol limit of above 0.05.
