After defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 in the USL Championship Final on Saturday, players for the Montreal Impact were honoured at city hall Tuesday night.

There was lots of cheering as the soccer team's 24 players and three coaches presented their Championship Cup to Mayor Gerald Tremblay, and signed the city's book of honour.

The Impact first won the championship in 1994, then again in 2004.

Head coach Marc Dos Santos said this year's win is particularly rewarding because many doubted him when he took over coaching the team halfway through the season, after a rough start for the players.

"When people doubt, it makes you stronger because you want to prove them wrong. All the critics in the beginning of the season made me very strong," Dos Santos said.

Team captain Mauro Biello said team team built up lots of confidence throughout the last part of the season.

"We started winning games, and with that momentum we brought it into the playoff and here we are today, champions," he said.

A public event will be held Thursday, where people can meet the players and congratulate them.
