Projet Montreal may have come in third place in Sunday's municipal election, but on Monday, they were celebrating a surge in support.

The party won 25.7 per cent of the vote, behind Union Montreal's 37.5 per cent, and Vision Montreal's 32.9 per cent.

The third-place finish was enough to earn 10 seats at City Hall, a sweep the Plateau Mont Royal borough. Management consultant Luc Ferrandez replaces long-standing councilor Michel Labrecque as borough mayor there.

The results reaffirm the party as a strong force in municipal politics after drawing themselves out from obscurity five years ago.

"I think people responded to our proposals for traffic calming, for better public transit, for better public services, and for better value for the tax dollars we pay," said Alexander Norris, who won a seat as city councilor in Mile-End.

Party leader Richard Bergeron said the three-way race served Mayor Gerald Tremblay well.

"If I had been alone against Mr. Tremblay or someone else alone against Mr. Tremblay, the results could have been different," said Bergeron.

Despite the loss, Bergeron said he expects his party to play an active role in city hall during Tremblay's four-year mandate.
