Police are hunting for a gunman who opened fire near Rockland Centre overnight.

Neighbours living two blocks northeast of the shopping mall called 9-1-1 around 12:30 Thursday morning when they heard a gun being fired.

Officers who rushed to the scene found a man with a bullet wound to his chest lying on a balcony of a home on Stuart, near de Liege.

The victim, a man in his thirties who has had frequent run-ins with the law, is being treated in hospital where he is in serious yet stable condition.

Constable Andre Leclerc said police have a good description of the suspect.

"He's a white man with a beard, who was wearing loose cargo pants, and he was wearing a hat or a baseball cap. He's about 35 years old," said Leclerc.
