Three people were injured overnight after their driver smashed into a tree and a hydro pole in the Plateau.

Police say the car was heading north on St. Denis around 1 a.m. Thursday when the driver lost control just north of Boucher.

"There were four people in the car when it lost control and hit a tree on the east side of the street," said Montreal Constable Andre Leclerc. "The driver was not hurt."

However the three passengers were hurt enough to warrant trips to hospital, mainly to be treated for whiplash.

Police suspect the driver was inebriated and asked him to take a breathalyzer test.

He was released on his own recognizance, and will be asked to appear in court at a later date.
