The Hudson's Bay Company is closing its distribution centre in Lachine in February, the company confirmed on Friday.

The warehouse supplies The Bay stores in Quebec and the Maritimes. HBC said it's a streamlining move that could affect about 190 people.

"(We) plan to work with associates over the course of the transition period to explore various options including severance payments and reemployment counseling," said Serge Coursol, regional vice-president for Eastern Canada.

Union

The Teamsters union says the announcement took them by surprise and came a year before their contract was due to be renegotiated. The union added that relations between the two sides had been "excellent."

"On top of that, it's getting to be the holidays, and the workers feel pretty bad about this, of course," said Gerry Boutin, president of Teamsters Local Union 931.

The union says that it plans to meet HBC management in Toronto to try and save the jobs at the plant.
