Vaccination centres on the island are expecting a busy weekend after Montreal's Public Health Agency expanded the list of eligible candidates for the vaccine.

Family members of those with compromised immune systems are now allowed to get the swine flu vaccine.

In addition, those who live with children between 6 months and five years of age can roll up their sleeves, and young people between the ages of five and 19 will also be able to get vaccinated.

Previously, the three abovementioned groups were refused vaccinations even if they showed up with members of priority groups.

The public health agency says it decided to add schoolchildren to the list because of the increasing numbers of outbreaks in schools.

There are also more people, particularly children, being admitted to hospitals and intensive care because of swine flu.

Deaths

28 Quebecers have now died from the second wave of swine flu, which began in late August.

In all 54 Quebecers have died because of the virus.

Busing

The health agency is considering a plan to bus children to vaccination centres, and is expected to announce a decision next week.

Dr. Richard Lessard, director of the public-health agency, told a news conference that high school students would likely be the only ones to be bused.

"Parents do not like the idea of having their children, mostly the ones at the primary (school) level, to be bused to the vaccination centre," he said.

However Lester B. Pearson school board chairman Marcus Tabachnick insists the best solution is to vaccinate students in their schools.

"To run shuttle buses in and out of schools is problematic and potentially dangerous," said Tabachnick. "I don't want people to think this is a jurisdictional fight. We just want the kids to get done in the best, most effective, most efficient, safest and most secure way."

Supply

Dr. Lessard says an average of 15,000 to 20,000 people are being vaccinated every day in Montreal. There are 200,000 doses available with more on the way.

Children under 14 years of age who show up at vaccination centres will have to be accompanied by adults or need authorization from their parents.
