MONTREAL - Quebec is experiencing a mild outbreak of the mumps, a viral infection characterized by fever and inflammation of the salivary glands.

Fifteen cases have been reported in the province so far.

The outbreak began in August in the United States and spread to Quebec when people infected with the virus travelled to the province.

Mumps is usually prevented by a routine childhood vaccination.
