Montreal police are investigating a fire in Verdun that appears to be intentionally set.

The blaze broke out at 1:40 a.m. Saturday at De L'Eglise and Cool Sts. in a condominium complex under construction.

No one was injured, but more than 100 people were forced to evacuate nearby buildings. The intense heat damaged five or six vehicles.

Accelerants were found at the scene, said Montreal police Const. Andre Leclerc.

"It was frightening. I mean, I just wanted to get the kids out as fast as I could," said local resident Diane Barnard.

The fire caused extensive damage to the neighborhood's phone lines and officials from Bell said it will be at least two days before they can be repaired.

Police are meeting with witnesses, and are seeking information leading to the arsonist.
