Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay is taking on a new role Tuesday night as he presides over the first Ville Marie borough council meeting since the municipal elections on Nov. 1.

The mayor of Montreal now serves as the mayor of Ville Marie under Bill 22, which was passed by the Quebec government in June 2008.

The downtown core, the Gay Village, Old Montreal and the islands of Jean Drapeau Park are all part of the borough.

Borough councillors chosen

Tremblay has chosen Jocelyne-Ann Campbell and Richard Deschamps to sit on the Ville Marie borough council.

Campbell is a city councillor for the St. Sulpice district, while Deschamps is a city councillor for St. Louis who sits on the Montreal executive committee.

Labonte's old territory

Benoit Labonte, former leader of the opposition at city hall, served as the Ville Marie borough mayor for the past four years.

Labonte quit politics in October after allegations surfaced that he accepted thousands of dollars in cash from businessmen tied to the water meter scandal.

He initially denied the allegations, but later admitted that he had in fact taken the money to fund his Vision Montreal leadership bid in the spring of 2008.
