Damon Duval kicked a 33-yard field goal with no time left on the clock to give the Montreal Alouettes a thrilling 28-27 Grey-Cup victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
It was a boneheaded play by Saskatchewan with five ticks left on the clock that gave Duval two chances at victory.
The 'Riders had too many men on the field as Duval missed a 38-yard kick, and the ensuing penalty gave the Als another chance at a championship from five yards closer.
Duval didn't disappoint, and the Alouettes completed an incredible comeback from 20-10 down in the third quarter.
The Alouettes, outplayed for much of the game, erased a 16-point deficit in the final 10 minutes with touchdowns by Avon Cobourne and Ben Cahoon, plus Duval's boot with time run out on the clock.
Redemption
The victory ended a run of Grey Cup woes for the Alouettes and quarterback Anthony Calvillo, who has won two Grey Cups in seven tries since 2000. They also ended a four-game losing streak in the Grey Cup with their sixth title overall.
"We came back, and the guys fought and what a joyful event,'' Calvillo told TSN. "It's a huge relief for me. We always wanted another chance to come back and compete for a championship and win, and we finally pulled it off. So amazing.''
Calvillo completed 26 of 39 passes for 314 yards and two touchdowns to improve his his record to 2-5 in Grey Cup games. He also became the all-time leader in touchdown passes in the title game with nine.
Cobourne, who ran for 85 yards on 16 carries, was named the game's MVP while Cahoon, who made five catches for 57 yards, was top Canadian.
Rider nation mourns
The Roughriders failed in a bid for a second Cup in three years in gut-wrenching fashion.
"It was a lack of communication ... but it should have been recognized," Roughriders head coach Ken Miller said of the critical late penalty. "The disappoinment of this loss is going to affect us as long as we're on this planet.
"Total 100 per cent disappointment."
