Motorists in Quebec may soon face a 24-hour license suspension if they drive with a 0.05 per cent blood-alcohol level or higher in their systems, Transport Minister Julie Boulet announced Monday.

It's one of 27 recommendations Boulet suggested in a security report released Monday to help improve road safety.

The new alcohol regulation comes under a bill that is expected to be introduced in the National Assembly this week.

In the report, the recommendation was made to drop the blood limit in Quebec from 80 milligrams to 50 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood.

"Once the public... realizes that it is dangerous to drive with 50 milligrams, they will change their behaviour. They're not stupid, and if they have the correct information, they will adapt their behaviour to a better way of doing things," said Jean-Marie de Koninck from the Quebec road safety task force.

If a driver is found to have higher than a 0.05 per cent blood-alcohol level, police could seize the vehicle for 24 hours.

Further, the report recommends zero tolerance for drivers under 22, as well as stricter penalties for street racing and for car surfing.
