Montreal social group Dans la rue launched its annual fundraising campaign Tuesday with the looming winter serving as a reminder about the challenge facing the homeless.

Dans la rue is helping young people get off the streets and into their own apartments -- another step in the agency's outreach program.

The agency will make intervention workers available to homeless youth who have been provided with lodging.

Finding an apartment is the first step towards a better life for troubled youth, Dans la rue executive director Aki Tchitakov tells CTV's Stephane Giroux.

"The work we've done (is) to get these kids back to school, into reinsertion programs (so) they can have that apartment they can afford," he said.

Roadblocks

Finding an apartment for youths who have been on the margins of society for years is just a first step.

Even after a landlord agees to set aside a unit, some young people don't know how to run a budget or even cook their own food.

The support staff will guide the teens through the steps of getting off the street and into an apartment.
