The Olympic torch was carried though several South Shore communities on Monday, and arrived in Longueuil in the evening.

Reporting live from the Longueil Sports Centre, CTV Montreal reporter Annie Demelt said a large crowd had gathered for the occasion.

"We have entertainment here and a few hundred people," DeMelt said.

Steve MacLean, president of the Canadian Space Agency, was chosen to carry the torch into Longueuil.

He said he was "very impressed" by the experience, DeMelt reported.

Torch troubles in Kahnawake

The Olympic flame will make its way through the Mohawk community of Kahnawake on Tuesday, but without its traditional RCMP escort.

Some members of the community were offended by the possibility of an RCMP presence on native territory because they feel that police force does not have any jurisdiction in the community.

After negotiations between the two sides, it was decided that the flame will be accompanied by Mohawk peacekeepers along a reduced 300-metre stretch.

"I think most people realize that this is a ceremonial thing, it's not a policing action that's taking place...but the fact is some people are very uncomfortable with that, and it was felt that we should try and work something out," said Joe Delaronde of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake.
