A routine tire-changing operation turned tragic on the south shore Tuesday morning when a young mechanic was killed.

It happened at Les Pneus Robert Bernard in Chambly as the man was trying to inflate the tire of a large transport truck.

Such tires have a high air pressure, and they're only supposed to be inflated inside of a protective steel cage.

But for some reason, the mechanic was not using the cage as he inflated the tire, and it exploded.

He died on the scene.

The mechanic was a four-year veteran of the garage.

The Workplace Health and Safety Commission is investigating the explosion.

Psychologists will visit the garage to help colleagues deal with the tragedy.

Chambly is about 20 kilometres southeast of Montreal.
