Montreal's snow removal crews are tackling the mess left by the first storm of the season.

Twenty-eight centimetres of snow fell Wednesday, six more than fell on that same date in 2008.

Some 3,000 employees are using 2200 pieces of equipment to clear streets in the city's 19 boroughs.

Snow removal czar Yves Girard is asking Montrealers to do the same as they did earlier in the week to make dealing with the snow as easy as possible.

"We ask the people to continue as they did yesterday," said Girard. "Use public transit and leave their car at home."

For those who choose to bring their cars into the city, Girard urges them to respect the temporary no-parking signs put in place on some streets to facilitate snow removal.

Girard says the city cannot predict how long it will take to finish the snow removal operation, but it has made clearing the 15 busiest public-transit routes a priority.
