The City of Montreal says it appears that a landlord whose building was infested with mice and roaches has begun work to clean up the run-down building.

Robert Sebag had been given until Monday to begin fixing the problems in his building on Vezina in Cote-des-neiges.

Sebag's manager says the work began on Friday evening when a huge piece of asbestos, left for several months outside of the building, was removed from the basement of the building.

The manager also says workers fixed the heating system, though some of the tenants say it was still quite chilly in their units.

"Obviously the landlord obeyed the notice we sent last week," City manager Michel Therrien told CTV's Caroline Van Vlaardingen.

Relocation

The city is talking about finding new homes for people who live in the building.

Four tenants say they would like to move, but others say they want to stay because their children go to school across the street.

Meanwhile, the extermination process continues to deal with cockroaches and mice.
