A 22-year-old man was fatally stabbed in a bar in Old Montreal early Saturday morning.

Police responded to several 911 calls claiming that a fight had broken out inside Tribe HyperClub at 400 St Jacques St. near Square Victoria at 2 a.m.

When they arrived on the scene, police found a man who had been stabbed multiple times. He was taken to hospital, where he died hours later, said Montreal police Const. Olivier Lapointe.

Police arrested a 20-year-old suspect inside the same bar. The major crimes unit is interrogating the man. No charges have been laid yet.

Lapointe couldn't say whether the victim and the suspect knew each other.

"This is something that we don't know yet. The victim was known to police, that's clear for us, but we still have to talk to the suspect. He's going to be under interrogation for a good part of the evening, and then we'll see if we can apply charges against him. Then we'll see if there was a link between the suspect and the victim, if they knew each other, and if there was a story behind all that," said Lapointe.

This is the 30th homicide of the year 2009. At the same time last year, 27 homicides had been committed.
