Quebec is moving in to help Haiti recover from the devastating earthquake that destroyed much of the capital of Port-au-Prince on Tuesday.

Premier Jean Charest has announced the province will aid in the relief efforts, primarily by sending emergency workers to the area.

Teams of French-speaking doctors, nurses, firefighters and police officers will be heading to the country to offer immediate help.

Part of the long term plan also includes sending Hydro-Quebec officials to aid in reconstruction once it begins.

Canada's cash

The federal government announced Thursday that it will match individual donations to registered Canadian charitable organizations.

The federal contribution will be capped at $50 million and will run until Feb. 12.
