The Quebec government has doled out $3.9 million dollars in fines since August to motorists caught by photo radar and red light cameras.

The most effective radar location is at the southbound 15 near the Atwater exit.

Nearly 8,500 drivers have been caught at the site since the summer.

Jean-Marie De Koninck, who sits on the Quebec road safety taskforce, says drivers tend to slow down an average of nine km/h on roads with photo radar.

That reduction in speed makes drivers 27 percent less likely to get into a road accident, he added.

But some drivers told CTV Montreal reporter Rob Lurie they believe photo radar is nothing more than a government cash grab.

“I think it’ll make the roads safer in the long run, right now I think they’re gonna make cash,” said one man.

It cost the government $6.5 million to implement the photo radar system, which is projected to bring in about $10 million in its first year.

The government says the money collected from the fines goes toward road safety programs.
