A 27-year-old man has turned himself in to police following an overnight crash that claimed the lives of two people.

A vehicle struck a lamppost on de la Concorde Blvd. in the Duvernay district of Laval at 2:15 a.m.

Police first believed only the two victims, 22-year-old Leonardo Facchino and 23-year-old Corinne Gauthier Giambona, were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Six hours after the crash, however, a 27-year-old man who was allegedly driving the vehicle turned himself in to police and was placed under arrest.

"He identified himself and said he was the driver of this vehicle. What we've got so far is, apparently he seemed to just -- he walked off and just walked away," said Laval police Constable Frank DiGenova.

Police arrested the driver, who was then transported to hospital to be checked for internal injuries and a possible a concussion.

Once released, he could face a number of serious charges.

"Anything from hit and run, to leaving the scene of an accident, not providing assistance. It's hard to tell right now, we have to talk to him and we have to talk to certain witnesses that were on the scene when it all happened," said DiGenova.

Friends mourn

Meantime, grief-stricken friends are in shock over the wreck that left their two friends dead.

"She's a good person. I'm gonna miss her a lot," said Eva Martinovich, a friend of Gauthier Giambona.

Martinovich, who gathered with friends at the scene of the crash, said she was frustrated by what appears to have happened.

"He left them to die. He ran away and just left them to die," she said.
