A 16-year-old made a brief appearance in a Montreal courtroom Monday to be charged with first-degree murder.

The boy was one of three people arrested early Sunday morning following the stabbing death of 24-year-old Dany Ouellet outside a bar in St. Henri.

The teenager did not enter a plea.

"He elected and he asked for a preliminary inquiry pro forma at another date, to wit the 15th of March," said Crown Prosecutor Anne-Andre Charette.

The day after Ouellet's death, his family left flowers outside the Black Jack Resto-Bar at 3814 Notre Dame St. West, and friends left messages mourning his loss at the makeshift shrine.

People who live in the neighbourhood, in some cases for decades, say they feel crime is getting worse, and they are sometimes afraid to walk the streets.

Police say Ouellet got into an argument inside the bar, and the fight continued outside, where an attacker pulled out a knife and stabbed him repeatedly.

Three people were taken into custody a few blocks away, but two men have since been released.

Police say they could also face charges as the investigation continues into exactly what happened at the bar.
