Cheryl Bailey, the wife of a man who police say is one of Montreal's most dangerous gang leaders, has been released from jail.
Bailey, 41, had been in custody after refusing to halt all communication with Ducarme Joseph, who escaped a deadly assassination attempt in Old Montreal last week.
Bailey, who has five children by Joseph, was picked up last Friday for possession of a gun silencer.
After spending several days in jail, Bailey at first refused to accept bail conditions that included an agreement not to speak with her husband and co-defendant. She finally agreed to the conditions on Thursday evening.
Joseph is behind bars for several charges, including the same weapons count that led to the arrest of his wife following a raid on their home in Dollard-des-Ormeaux.
Shooting
Joseph fled a hail of bullets at his high-end fashion boutique on March 18. Store manager Jean Gaston and Joseph's bodyguard, Peter Christopoulos, were both killed. A second bodyguard and a bystander were wounded.
Police say the shooting was a professional hit that may have been linked to a Mafia turf war.
Arrest
Not long after the shooting, police said they saw Joseph with an alleged hit man, nicknamed "Gunman," in St. Michel, and began around-the-clock surveillance.
Last Friday morning Joseph was spotted inside a restaurant in N.D.G. with two new bodyguards.
All three were arrested minutes later in front of the offices of construction contractor Tony Magi on Upper Lachine Rd. It was not far from where Nick Rizutto Jr., the son of reputed Mafia boss Vito Rizzuto, was murdered in December.
The presiding judge, Justice Gilles Garneau, said Monday that there's a strong possibility the defendants will launch revenge attacks if they're set free. The Crown added that the public could be at risk.
