Ottawa - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to consume a Silani brand mozzarella cheese product because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The federal agency said late Thursday that the affected product is sold in 340-gram packages bearing UPC 0 650525 7 and a best-before date of March 1, 2011.

It was manufactured by Silani Sweet Cheese Ltd. of Schomberg, On., and distributed in Ontario and Quebec. The company is voluntarily recalling the product.

The CFIA says it is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

The agency says there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of the cheese.

It said food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled.
