Police are searching for two men who robbed and assaulted a quadriplegic man and left him on the ground at Lafontaine Park Tuesday afternoon.

The 59-year-old victim was approached at 4:30 p.m. by two men who asked him for a cigarette, then took his wallet and motorized wheelchair.

He was left lying helpless on the ground for more than four hours before passersby came to his aid.

"It's easy to say that could never happen here, that Montreal is a safe city, but there are bad seeds everywhere," said Chris Kennedy of the Quebec Paraplegic Association.

Police say they have a vague description of the two attackers.

"(They are) two white men, aged about 30 years old, 5'7 weighing about 150 pounds. They look like they might be homeless people," said Montreal police Const. Anie Lemieux.

At Lafontaine Park, the incident has left some wondering how anyone could commit a crime of this nature.

"It's crazy," said one regular visitor to the park. "Why anyone would treat any person like that is beyond me."
