What some call the invention that changed the 20th century, the birth control pill celebrated its 50th anniversary Sunday.

An invention that gave women the power to choose, the approval of the oral contraception in the United States in 1960 ushered in an era that transformed the lives of women, giving them greater power to decide if and when they wanted to become a mother.

Illegal in Canada until 1969, the pill was made legal when a Trudeau-government bill that also legalized "therapeutic" abortions and homosexual acts between consenting adults was passed by parliament.
