Montreal mayor Gerald Tremblay has rejected a developer's plan to build condos on the former site of Marianopolis College, on Cote des Neiges Rd.

The site was sold to a developer for $46 million in 2008 after the college moved to another campus, in Westmount.

Développement Cato Inc. envisioned a $300 million project that would redevelop the main building on the site into luxury condos – selling for as much as $1 million each.

The plan also called for single-family dwellings to be built around the main building, but Tremblay said he does not want new buildings constructed on the Mount Royal green space.

"Any new construction will be confined to space that will be available in the existing building," he said.

Environmental groups, including Friends of the Mountain, said they are pleased with the city's decision.

The developer could not be reached for comment.
