A bar of soap that was being marketed as made from the remains of Holocaust victims has turned out to be a fake.

Laboratory analysis showed no signs of human or animal DNA.

The bar of soap caused an uproar in March, when it was reported that a store was selling a bar of soap stamped with a swastika.

At the time, store owners Ivan and Abraham Botines said they had purchased the soap from a Canadian soldier who found it in a concentration camp.

The Botines, both collectors of Nazi memorabilia, are observant Jews.

During World War II there were frequent rumours that the Nazis were making soap, candles and other items from their victims.

Historians say there has never been any valid evidence that such things were ever made.
