A 48-year-old man was struck and killed by a passenger train in St. Henri Friday morning.

It happened around 10:30 a.m. near Notre Dame St. and Place St. Henri metro station.

Witnesses reported seeing the man stop and bend down while crossing the tracks, said Montreal police Const. Daniel Lacoursiere.

"It seems that he dropped something," Lacoursiere said.

He was hit by a westbound VIA train heading to Ottawa, and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police are investigating.
