Residents on a quiet street in Ste. Catherine, south of Montreal, were jolted awake early Sunday morning when a driver lost control of her SUV and ploughed through three yards and a garage.

The driver, a woman in her late thirties or early 40s, lost control of her vehicle at 3:30 a.m., heavily damaging one car, then hitting a second.

She then made a hard right turn and crashed in to Marc Lemire's garage door on des Erables St.

"You see this in the news, but not in your house," said Lemire.

Lemire's 64-year-old mother, who was asleep in the basement, became trapped. She was rescued by firefighters.

"She was lucky the car didn't pass through the wall because it's only gyprock," said Lemire, who estimates the damage at $15,000.

The three-month-old Kia Sportage belonging to neighbour Gaetan Vetri is totalled.

A Breathalyzer test was administered on scene, said witnesses, who said the woman was arrested.
