An open-air exhibit is giving art lovers a chance to tour the Laurentians, while some artists display their work in makeshift galleries in their own rural backyards.

From Saturday to Aug. 8, the Route des Arts is presenting a nine-day open-air event allowing artists to put their passions on display in 34 studios across the greater Argenteuil region.

In its 11th year, organizers suggest visitors begin at the location of their choice, then visit other studios by following road signs.

"What's great is that you have an opportunity to see the artist working in their studio," said Stephen Lessard, touring galleries Saturday.

The event, which draws an average 12,000 studio visits per year, also helps bolster the economy.

"We make people come to this region, and at the same time we also help the local merchants -- the hotels, the restaurants," said Ilania Abileah, vice president of Routes des Arts.

Art was a luxury hit hard by the economic crisis, but artists on the Route des Arts said they hope if people don't buy, they'll at least enjoy the experience of watching artists in their studio.

"They have the opportunity to see how the artist creates his art, which you can't see in a gallery," said Abileah.

Though Lessard didn't spend much money on a piece -- he bought an ink print for $20 -- he viewed his tour on the Route des Arts as an adventure.

"I (was) looking for (something) not too expensive, I'll be honest with you, but what I really, really enjoy is seeing the artists at work. That's the best part," said Lessard.
