Montreal police are investigating after a foreign student died while breaking up a brawl in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The 26-year-old man from Pakistan was stabbed to death at the corner of Jeanne Mance St. and Crémazie Blvd. W. in Park Extension. Police did not identify him by name.

"He had nothing to do with the conflict," that occurred outside a celebration to mark the Pakistan's independence day in Lucien PAge school on St. Laurent Blvd. at Jarry St., said Montreal police Sgt. Ian Lafreniere. "It's a very sad circumstance."

Police found the victim unconscious after receiving calls to 9-1-1 at 1:35 a.m., said Lafreniere.

The victim had received critical stab wounds to the neck and was declared dead in hospital.

Another man was found at the scene with wounds to his leg.

The injured victim was able to describe to police the vehicle his assaulters fled in; it was a gold-coloured Toyota registered with Ontario plates.

Police traced the car to an apartment building, where they found two other men inside the vehicle. They had also suffered minor stab wounds.

A fifth man was found in a car with stab wounds near the scene of the brawl, said Lafreniere.

A sixth man, who is 36 years old, was also found in a nearby car and was arrested because police believe he was implicated in the incident, but he was too drunk to provide any assistance to police.

None of the four victims is in critical condition, said Lafreniere.

All five survivors of the incident have been detained and are being questioned by police. No one has been charged, though police say charges could range from armed assault to second-degree murder.

Police said the principal crime sceme is where the incident seems to have taken place, on Jeanne Mance between De Liège and Guizot Sts. They have yet to find a weapon and spent Sunday combing the various scenes with canine units.

This is the 23rd homicide of the year in Montreal.
