A neighbour of an 82-year-old woman whose body was found Tuesday night, several days after she went missing from her home, thinks he saw part of the crime while it was happening.

The body of Rejeanne Pelletier-Charette was found two kilometres from her home in Rock Forest, a suburb of Sherbrooke, and on Wednesday police continued to search the area where she was found for clues.

But Patrick Clerc, who lives near Pelletier-Charette, says he saw a car several days ago in the same field.

At the time he thought the people in the car were young lovers so he paid them no mind.

Now Clerc is haunted by what he saw, and thinks he spotted a man trying to take Pelletier-Charette's body out of her car.

"Maybe, I say to myself, maybe I can save her, maybe she wasn't dead," said Clerc. "Every time I see this [mental] picture of the guy in the car. It's always there."

Teenager charged with kidnapping

Pelletier-Charette was reported missing on Sunday, and the next day police arrested a 16-year-old boy several hours after Pelletier-Charette's car was found in the parking lot of a grocery store.

After extensive questioning the boy was charged Tuesday with kidnapping, confinement, theft and possession of stolen goods in connection with the woman's disappearance.

Pelletier-Charette's remains have now been brought to Montreal, where an autopsy is being conducted to determine exactly how she died.

Police said it is too early to determine if additional charges will be recommended.
