Kenyan Juluis Chogue Kirwa took the first-place finish in the 20th anniversary of the Montreal Oasis Marathon.

The 42.2-kilometre race saw a record turnout, with 22,000 participants.

Most set off from the Jacques Cartier Bridge at 8:40 a.m., completing the 42.2-kilometre route at Olympic Stadium.

From the Jacques Cartier Bridge, runners circled Ile-Ste-Helene and Ile-Notre-Dame, before crossing on to the island of Montreal.

The route winded its way north past Parc LaFontaine to Van Horne Avenue before passing by the Rosemont metro station.

Runners then headed south down de Lorimier to Rachel, before circling the Botanical Garden and crossing the Olympic Stadium finish line.

More than 6,000 more participants registered in this year's event than last year, which should secure its spot among prestigious international marathons, said the event's director general Bernard Arsenaul.

The male and female winners each take home $10,000.

In addition to the marathon, other events included the 1-kilometre Radio Canada P'tit Marathon (for kids age 3-11, which began at 8:30 a.m. start from the chalet at Parc Maisonneuve), Sports Experts 5-kilometre Walk/Run (8:40 a.m., from corner of Sherbrooke and Pie IX), Advil 10-kilometre (8:45 a.m., from Pere-Marquette Park) and a half-marathon (10:15 a.m., from the Jacques Carter Bridge).
