A 28-year-old Montreal North man facing charges of making death threats, improper storage of firearms and child pornography has been granted bail.

David Abitbol, who lives with his parents, was released into their custody on Tuesday after they agreed to post $33,000 in financial guarantees.

Abitbol was arrested on Oct. 2 for allegedly sending out death threats online. Police say they searched his residence and found five firearms, several hundred rounds of ammunition, and child pornography on his computer.

The friends he was chatting with online told police that Abitbol, who uses the online alias David Darkiller, wrote about a desire to kill former teachers and classmates, and wanting to go down in history for killing a large number of people for no reason whatsoever.

Abitbol also apparently feared elves, goblins and imps, and said he needed firearms to protect himself from the illusionary creatures.

During the hearing Abitbol's father Joseph downplayed the threats, saying it was all due to a misunderstanding.

However Abitbol's lawyer, Charles Benmuyan, said the judge agreed to grant bail because his mother was willing to assume full responsibility for her son.

"What the judge did was decide that the family the complete family, not just the father, but his mother were able to offer a form of support and a form of control that is sufficient for him," said Benmuyan.

While out on bail Abitbol will not be allowed to have any access to computers, the Internet or firearms, and will be required to frequently see a psychiatrist.

His next date in court in Nov. 24.
