MONTREAL - Montreal police have launched an internal investigation into their procedures after a woman was murdered in her own home.

28-year-old Marie Altagracia Dorval was killed on Oct. 17, one week after she calld 9-1-1 to report that her ex-husband was threatening her.

Police are not yet ready to say they made mistakes, but Assistant Chief Sylvain Brouillette admits that the department failed to provide the help requested.

"I want to be careful before I talk about making mistakes," said Brouillette. "We're talking about irregularities and we want to know what we can do differently."

According to Altagracia's brother, she and her partner regularly fought, and Altagracia had a restraining order against her ex.

However when she called police to complain about Edens Kenold on Oct. 11, Montreal police never dispatched an officer to investigate.

Brouillette says that domestic abuse cases are a priority for the force, and he wants to make sure calls are never ignored again.

Kenolds was charged with first-degree murder on Oct. 18 and sent to the Philippe-Pinel Institute for a psychiatric evaluation.
