MONTREAL- For years, Share the Warmth has been giving underprivileged families in Montreal's Point St. Charles, Little Burgundy and St. Henri neighbourhoods a hand up.
The organization operates a food bank and youth programs.
This year, a tutoring program pairing neighborhood children with McGill students is really taking off.
It started when the organization began handing out scholarships for kids heading into high school.
"That was for kids coming out of the primary school system in what we call challenging areas," said Fiona Crossling.
The scholarship covered school supplies and clothes, but students were still struggling to make the grade.
"We said if we don't intervene somehow by offering more support these kids are not going to make it through high school," said Crossling.
Share the Warmth reached out to volunteers, and found many university and high school students vying for extra credits.
Kylie Sura is one such volunteer, a high school student who started helping out just to get course credit.
But the bond she made with a child named Anik convinced her to keep volunteering.
"I still just keep coming to help Anik because it makes me just feel like I'm really helping her," said Sura.
That bond, and that dedication, makes Share the Warmth's tutoring program unique.
