MONTREAL - Montreal police are continuing to search for a 27-year-old man who went missing on Sunday morning.

Montreal police Const. Daniel Lacoursière said Tuesday morning there were no new developments in the case of Matthew Besner.

He was last seen at 2 a.m. Sunday morning outside L'Orignal restaurant on St. Alexis near Notre Dame.

Besner went outside, and when his friends left the restaurant a few minutes later, he had vanished.

"He was sitting here on the bench and was with other people the entire time except for a period of three minutes, during which he disappeared," said Besner's brother in law, Joshua Chinks.

Because nobody has seen or heard from him since, and because he was only supposed to go outside to wait for friends, a public alert has been issued.

"He goes off the radar…that's very peculiar," Lacoursière said Monday. "That's why the report was taken so promptly and that's why we're looking for him right now."

A search began Sunday morning when Besner did not return home, and on Monday, family and friends of Besner met outside the restaurant and continued searching back alleys and snowbanks for any sign of the missing man.

A man told police he saw Besner walking south on St. Alexis before turning left on a small side street.

By late Monday afternoon the headquarters for the search had moved from the restaurant to 60 de Bresoles St., Apt 302, where people are still welcome if they'd like to help out.

The search party of approximately 100 volunteers had pretty well covered Old Montreal by Monday afternoon, and had expanded the search to the entire downtown area.

"(The first) 48 hours are crucial," said Jeremy Chapson, a friend of Besner's. "And we're getting there at this point."

An anonymous donor came forward late Monday afternoon offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to Besner being found, and that amount was increased to $10,000 later Monday evening.

Another friend said Besner would have no reason to runaway as he led a very stable life.

"He's a pretty quiet guy, happy guy, very stable," Adam Shapiro said. "He lived with his girlfriend, had the same job for a few years, a loyal friend, not a big partier."

Besner is 27 years old, stands 5,9" (1.74 m), and weighs 189 pounds (85 kg)

He has dirty blond hair and brown eyes.

When last seen Besner was wearing a black Canada Goose jacket, a black sweater and blue jeans.
