MONTREAL - Since New Year's Day is on a weekend this year, some businesses and offices will be closed on Monday. Here's what's open and closed for the next few days:

Some Essentials

Retail stores and grocery stores are closed on New Year's Day.

The SAQ will be open until 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 (7 p.m. for SAQ Express outlets), but will be closed on New Year's Day.

Banks will be closed on Monday

There will be no collection or delivery of mail on Monday.

Garbage, recycling and large-item pickups vary by borough; call 311 or go to www.ville.montreal.qc.ca/info-collectes.

Parking metres in Montreal will continue to operate as usual, and all no parking signs remain in effect.

The city's sports facilities will operate on schedules dictated by the boroughs, so you need to check with the individual facilities to see when they are closed over the holidays. The Claude Robillard Centre is closed until Tuesday.

Government

Federal and provincial government offices are closed Saturday to Monday.

Most Montreal city offices will be closed from until Tuesday, including all borough and Accès Montréal offices. The same is true in both Laval and Longueuil. Residents can call 3-1-1 or consult their city website for more information on what services are available.

Montreal Municipal Court will be closed until Jan. 4.

Attractions

The Biodôme will be open on New Year's Day.

The Botanical Garden and Insectarium are closed on Monday. The Insectarium will in fact be shut until the summer for major renovations.

The Planetarium will be closed New Year's Day.

Transportation

Société de transport de Montreal buses and métros are running on their regular Saturday schedule on New Year's Day.

Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT) will offer reduced service on its train lines on New Year's Day. Call 514-287-8726 or visit www.amt.qc.ca.

Sociéte de transport de Laval buses are free of charge Friday, though riders are asked to make a donation to provide breakfast for Laval students. The network is running on a Saturday schedule on Friday, and on a reduced Sunday schedule for New Year's Day.
