MONTREAL - Surete du Quebec officers operating an overnight speed trap caught a very fast driver Friday morning.

At 3 a.m. police officers operating a radar gun spotted a car flying along the Ville Marie Expressway, which is a 70 km/h zone, at more than 3 times the posted limit.

The driver pulled over near the Atwater exit and was fined $2598 for going 240 km/h.

He was also handed 42 demerit points, his license was immediately revoked for two years, and the car was impounded.

Despite several rumours, Sgt. Genevieve Bruneau could not confirm that the driver was a valet from a hotel driving a client's car, however she did say that the speeder had not been drinking, and that police did not have to chase him in order to pull him over.

"The only thing I can tell you is that we gave him a ticket, but we are not currently investigating a theft," she said.

While the driver's demerit points will be erased after two years, if he is caught speeding in the next decade he will face harsher penalties.
