MONTREAL - In the sharp eye of political analyst L. Ian MacDonald, provincial front runner Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe suffered his "worst night ever in a leaders' debate."

The Montreal-based politico deconstructed Tuesday night's federal leaders debate for CTV Montreal and noted that Gilles Duceppe is short on grievances and ended up "losing his cool," looking "irritated, rude and patronizing."

MacDonald also pointed out that Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff suffered a bad blow when he was unable to come up with a replique to NDP chief Jack Layton's attack concerning Ignatieff's poor attendance record in the house.

"Most Canadians who don't show up for work don't get a promotion," said Layton.

Ignatieff took that one, "squarely on the chin," says MacDonald.

Ignatieff missed his chance to gain ground on Harper, in MacDonald's view.

L, as he is known, was also not enamored of the set.

"Great debate but the cheesiest set I've seen. It looked like the inside of a garage or storage locker," he said.
