Police have arrested a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old on charges after a 56-year-old died from head injuries in hospital on Wednesday in the Montreal borough of Verdun.

Police released the name and photo of Francis Belanger, 18, who was arraigned Friday on a charge of involuntary manslaughter. The second suspect is a minor and his or her identity is therefore protected.

The attack occurred on Friday April 8, at around 11 p.m. near the corner of Ross and de L'Eglise.

The victim apparently went out to find his daughter. He called out to two young women he believed knew his daughter.

They did not, and two young men intervened and struck the man. He died after falling to the ground.

The victim, Iqbal Ahmed, was a well-known member of the local Bangladeshi community who ran a website with community news.

A ceremony was held Friday in Ahmed's honour.
