BROCKVILLE, Ont. - Sixty passengers escaped unscathed after the rear of the bus they were on caught fire as it travelled down a busy Ontario highway Friday afternoon.

A Coach Canada spokesman says the driver of the travelling on the 401 "noticed difficulties" with the vehicle and pulled over between Brockville and Prescott.

When passengers got off the bus and gathered at a safe distance they noticed flames and thick black smoke coming from near the rear wheels.

The driver called 911 and then took an extinguisher to the flames himself before fire crews arrived to put out the blaze entirely.

Bus line spokesman John Crowley says all passengers and the driver were unharmed.

The bus was bound for Toronto from Montreal and the company sent a replacement coach to ferry them to Kingston for onward travel.

Crowley says some of the passengers' belongings may have been damaged, but the company will provide compensation.

The cause of the blaze, which slowed Good Friday traffic to a single lane, is under investigation.
